Learning Together, Learning For Life
34SR
34SR started the summer term by learning about our local environment and the people who help us in our community.
We explored maps to identify important places near our school and homes. We learnt about a range of community workers, including police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, teachers and shop workers. We also discussed who we can turn to for help and support, such as trusted adults, teachers, family members and other community helpers.
The children enjoyed thinking about future careers and sharing what they would like to do when they grow up. They learnt that everyone can make a valuable contribution to their community in different ways. We also explored how to care for our local area by showing kindness, keeping spaces tidy, recycling and respecting both nature and other people.
During the second half of the term, our learning focused on the great outdoors. The children took part in a variety of outdoor activities and explored the natural world around them. They planted and cared for sunflowers, learning about what plants need to grow and thrive. We also went on minibeast hunts, observing where different creatures live and discussing their habitats. These experiences helped deepen the children’s understanding of nature and the importance of protecting our environment.
It has been a wonderful, busy term filled with learning, exploration and opportunities to care for both our community and the world around us. We are very proud of all the children’s enthusiasm and achievements.
34BC
My Local Environment
During our topic this term, 34BC have been learning about gardens, parks and farms.
We have worked hard to fill pots with compost and to sow seeds in them . We have grown beetroot, spring onion, tomato and pepper plants and have planted them out in our trug.
We have worked with different vegetables and have cooperated with familiar adults to prepare vegetables making pasta salad, potato salad and soup. We have used our senses of smell, taste and touch to explore different vegetables.
We have also visited Hall Farm Park. We enjoyed seeing different animals. Some of us walked a goat and we fed the cows too. We enjoyed playing at the farm, where we ate a picnic on the grass and had a wonderful day!

Driving Towards Independence
This term, we were thrilled to receive our very own Smile Smart Technology DriveDeck in school and it has already transformed our cognition lessons. The DriveDeck is a powered mobility platform that enables students to experience independent movement by controlling it with a switch. Students are securely positioned onto the DriveDeck in their own wheelchairs and use a switch attached to their chair to move themselves along a track in the sensory garden.
We have been amazed by the progress that students have made in such a short period of time. Students who previously showed little interest in switch activities, preferred to explore the switch wires, or were more interested in throwing the switch than using it, are now actively engaging and operating switches with real purpose. Watching students realise that they can make something happen independently – and that they are moving without anyone pushing them – has been incredible!
The DriveDeck has opened up exciting new opportunities for developing switch skills, communication, cause and effect understanding and independence, not just for our team, but others across the school too! We hope that the confidence and skills gained through these sessions will transfer into the classroom and around school. Perhaps one day, you’ll even spot our students confidently travelling independently through Central Park!
We are very excited to see where this new learning journey will take us and are incredibly grateful to the school for investing in such a valuable resource.

3AM
Our Local Environment
This term, we have really enjoyed learning about our local environment and community. We have explored places that we can access in our community and practised taking familiar routes to some of our favourite places around school. These include the trampoline, soft play and the MUGA, where we have had lots of fun whilst developing our confidence and independence. Some of us also enjoyed a fantastic trip to the bowling alley, giving us the opportunity to experience another place in our local community with our friends.
A real highlight of the term was welcoming Lion Learners into school. We had the exciting opportunity to meet and explore a range of live animals including a snake, tortoise, rabbit, centipede and cockroaches. The students were fascinated and showed great curiosity and bravery when learning about each animal. To finish the term, all of the students took part in our sports day. Everyone enjoyed competing in individual races and working together as a class community in the relay races. It was wonderful to see excellent teamwork, determination and encouragement throughout the day.
We are incredibly proud of everything that the students have achieved this term and look forward to our summer activities as well as continuing our learning this term!
34HS
The summer term has been a busy and exciting one for 34HS! We have been learning all about our local environment, from developing our navigation skills and finding different locations around school to locating our school on a map and understanding the importance of caring for the environment around us.
We have also explored ‘People Who Help Us’, both within school and in the wider community. The students particularly enjoyed dressing up in a range of uniforms and taking part in role-play activities. They stepped into the roles of doctors, nurses, dentists, postal workers and construction workers, gaining an understanding of the important jobs these people do every day.
As part of our learning about plants and growth, we planted our own sunflower seeds and have enjoyed caring for them and watching them grow. Using our ‘My Thinking’ skills, we described our sunflower plants as tall or short, and some of us measured their height using Unifix cubes. We also explored different types of plants and learned about their various parts, including roots, stems, leaves and flowers. Using our ‘My Creativity’ skills, we painted and created our own beautiful sunflowers.
It has been wonderful to see the students enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement throughout the term, and we are incredibly proud of all they have achieved.

78JS
This term has been an exciting and busy one for 78JS, with lots of opportunities to learn both inside and outside the classroom.
One of the highlights of the term was a visit to a local mosque. The students enjoyed learning about the Muslim faith, exploring the mosque and gaining a deeper understanding of different cultures and beliefs. It was a valuable experience that helped bring their learning to life.
The class also took part in an engaging Material World science workshop. During the workshop, students investigated a variety of materials and discovered how science plays an important role in our everyday lives. Everyone enjoyed the hands-on activities and the chance to think like real scientists.
Science lessons have been a particular favourite this term. Students have been exploring the fascinating topics of sound and light through a range of practical investigations. They used torches to investigate how light travels and reflects from different surfaces, helping them to understand key scientific concepts through experimentation.
When learning about sound, the class had great fun using Boomwhackers to create music and recreate popular songs. The colourful musical tubes allowed students to work together, develop their listening skills and explore how sounds are produced. It was wonderful to see everyone participating enthusiastically and enjoying music-making as a team.
Well done to all of the students in 78JS for their hard work, curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the term. We look forward to many more exciting learning experiences in the future!
34RO
Team 34RO have had a fun and active summer term exploring our topic ‘My Local Environment’!
We have explored places within the local community through a range of practical activities. Using Google Maps on the touchscreen, the team have located local landmarks and facilities, as well as following directions from home to school. The team have also programmed Beebots to travel around our map of Scunthorpe, helping to develop early computing, problem solving and directional skills while supporting communication and choice making throughout the topic.
Outdoor learning has been a big focus this term. We have collected natural resources to create bug hotels and have taken part in visits to Central Park and The Pods. During these visits, the team have followed directions, practised road safety and stayed together safely while exploring the environment around them.
Weekly sensory sessions have continued to support wellbeing and physical development. The team have enjoyed rebound sessions, hydrotherapy and taekwondo, helping to build confidence, coordination and communication through movement and sensory experiences.
Alongside our topic work, team 34RO have continued to work towards their personal outcomes through meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. It has been a positive and enjoyable term, and we are very proud of everything the team has achieved.

All about Asia
In creative arts lessons we have researched Japan and then China. We started off by looking at Japanese art forms over history and were fascinated by the Sumi-e creations that focus on light and dark. We used real ink to learn the techniques and created some of our own masterpieces, painting trees, flowers and mountains. We then researched the Shodo style of calligraphy writing. We were able to phonetically spell our names and then used the ink to make our own creations, maintaining the correct hand and body posture. After that, we tested out our origami skills which challenged our fine motor skills considerably! We then moved on to researching China and that has also been very popular. We looked at Chinese culture and celebrations. We researched Chinese New Year, and everyone got very excited looking at all the special events and traditions. We made our own decorations for a Chinese New Year celebration, including an extremely large Chinese dragon that we all created in collaboration. We have enjoyed watching Chinese dragon dances and have experienced wearing a real Chinese dragon costume! We are now working on creating our own Chinese dragon dance, matching our steps to the beat of a drum – wish us luck!
7/8ND
78ND have been busy developing their investigative skills in science this term through lots of exciting practical activities.
The class explored transparent, translucent and opaque materials by searching around school for different objects and testing how much light could pass through them. Pupils enjoyed discussing their findings and sorting materials into the correct groups.
The investigations continued outside on the playground, where students explored how shadows are formed. They observed how the position of the light source changes the size and direction of shadows and had great fun experimenting with different shapes and movements.
Back in the classroom, 78ND created their own shadow puppets using torches. The pupils investigated how to make shadows bigger, smaller and move by changing the distance between the torch, the object and the wall. Everyone showed fantastic curiosity, teamwork and scientific thinking throughout the activities.
Well done, 78ND, for being such enthusiastic young scientists!

7/8 BW
7/8BW have had a busy and exciting term! The class enjoyed a visit to a local mosque, where they learnt about Islamic faith and culture. The class listened carefully as the guide showed us all about how Muslims pray and how they prepare for different cultural events.
They also took part enthusiastically in sports day, showing great teamwork and determination. There were lots of different races and events with the class showing great spirit throughout the day. The class finished the day by taking part in a whole class race!
To top it all off, the students had a fantastic school sleepover, creating lots of fun memories with their classmates.

9AM
What a fantastic and busy term it has been for 9AM!
In English, we have been working incredibly hard on our topic, ‘Water, Water Everywhere’, which has given us the opportunity to explore some exciting texts and develop our reading and writing skills. Before beginning our work on The Tempest, we learnt all about William Shakespeare and his fascinating life. The students were particularly surprised to discover that, in his will, Shakespeare left most of his possessions to his daughter, whilst his wife inherited only his “second-best bed”! This sparked lots of interesting discussions about life in Elizabethan England and what this might tell us about Shakespeare and his family.
As we explored The Tempest, we enjoyed getting to know the different characters and thinking carefully about their actions and personalities. We discussed who we thought were the ‘good’ characters and whose behaviour caused problems for others. Everyone shared thoughtful opinions and used evidence from the story to explain their ideas. It has been wonderful to see the class becoming more confident in expressing their views and listening respectfully to each other’s opinions.
This term has also been an important one as students have been making their key stage 4 option choice. We are incredibly proud of the mature and sensible way that everyone approached this decision. As well as talking through their ideas at home with families, students took the opportunity to speak with teachers and older students who are already studying the different subjects. This helped them to make informed choices about the courses that best suit their interests, strengths and future aspirations. We look forward to seeing them continue to grow and succeed as they move into the next stage of their education.
As the school year draws to a close, we are all looking forward to our end-of-year celebration. One of the highlights will be designing and creating our very own personalised T-shirts, giving everyone the chance to be creative and produce a special keepsake to remember the year. Of course, there will also be plenty of well-deserved treats and time to celebrate all that we have achieved together.
Finally, as team staff, we would like to say a huge thank you to all of our families for your continued support throughout the year. Your encouragement, communication and partnership have helped our students make excellent progress both academically and personally. We are incredibly proud of everything that the class has achieved and hope everyone has a wonderful, restful summer break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for another exciting year ahead!

Wonderful Water Poetry
Voices of Water
Poems inspired by the power, beauty and wonder of water
Water is all around us. It falls as rain, flows through rivers, crashes as waves and sparkles in puddles. This term, our students explored the sights, sounds and feelings of water through poetry.
Using their senses, exciting vocabulary and a range of poetic techniques, the students in 9LS created their own unique poems inspired by the many forms that water can take. From gentle streams whispering through the countryside to powerful oceans roaring against the shore, each poem reflects the imagination and creativity of its writer.
We hope you enjoy reading this collection of water-themed poetry and celebrating the fantastic artwork and writing of our young poets.

A Fantastic Day Out in Cleethorpes!
Students enjoyed a brilliant day out in Cleethorpes this term, making the most of the sunshine, seaside atmosphere and plenty of tasty treats!
Throughout the day, students showed great independence by purchasing their own food and drinks including ice creams, chips, burgers, crepes, doughnuts and candy floss. Staff were incredibly proud of the polite manners displayed, with students confidently ordering their food, handling money and thanking members of the public and shop staff.
There was plenty of time spent on the beach, where students enjoyed relaxing, exploring the seafront and spending time with their friends. The arcades were also a popular stop, bringing lots of laughter, excitement and friendly competition.
To round off the day, everyone enjoyed a ride on the famous land train, taking in the sights of the seafront before heading home.
The trip was a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate their growing maturity and independence. They represented the school brilliantly and showed just how much they are developing into responsible young adults.
It was an excellent day out filled with fun, friendship and fantastic memories!

A poem by 11LF (Made by us all!)
11LF’s Marvelous Goodbye Poem
We’re coming to our time at St Hugh’s.
I’ve got my prom suit and shoes.
The girls have got their dresses and heels.
We’ll be arriving on a set of wheels.
There is also talk of a T Rex at the prom.
We don’t know where its coming from?
We’re all going to different places next year.
Luckily, they are all quite near.
JLC, NLC and Trent View.
Looking forward to all things new.
St Hugh’s has been a blast.
It’s not just been our past.
We’ve had lots of happy years.
Lots of laughs, and a few tears.
So long and take care.
See you all at the summer fair.
